That’s a good question that we’re still trying to decide. Here are the options that we’re considering:
Small desktop computer
At the very least, WatermelonPC will be offered as a small desktop computer about the size of a pack of cigarettes. Despite the small size, this computer will have enough power to offer excellent performance.
If there is sufficient interest, we’ll also make WatermelonPC available as an economy priced laptop.
What makes WatermelonPC so unique is the software that runs it. This software will run on any computer hardware that’s been available for the past 10 years. If you have an old computer or laptop that’s not being used, it can probably be converted into a WatermelonPC.
We plan to make the WatermelonPC software available on CD, USB drive or as a digital download. Of course, this will mean that you’ll need to install the software yourself, but if you’re comfortable doing that it will be available.
Which form-factor is right for you?
If you have a preference as to how you’d like to use WatermelonPC, please tell us by filling out our survey.
Yes it is.
However, there are several things that a Windows or Mac computer have that you won’t find on WatermelonPC. There’s no file system. There’s no word processor. The latest first-person shooter game is not supported. You can’t install any new software.
WatermelonPC is a browser-centric computer. It’s meant to be used to explore the web with a browser. You can still edit documents and watch movies on Netflix and most anything else that people do on computers. You’ll just be editing those documents online and not in Microsoft Word.
We made this very important design decision for 2 reasons:
- Providing many different software packages is very confusing to our target users. The more things there are to use, the more things there are that need to be mastered. By restricting everything to go through the browser, our users become proficient very quickly. And frankly, there’s really nothing that these users need that can’t be done through a browser.
- Limiting the things that the WatermelonPC can do allows us to lock things down. This is the critical step to creating a maintenance-free computer. No more misconfigured software, no more strange problems that no one can track down, and most importantly, there is no place for malware to run and hide.
By having these limitations we’re able to create a very stable computer that’s extremely reliable. Our users have not noticed nor minded the fact that certain things aren’t there.
We believe that WatermelonPC is the easiest computer for novice users to master.
The design for WatermelonPC comes from many years of working with seniors and other computer novices, and the best practices that were learned have been built into this product. Many design choices that were made echo back to the early days of the web when things were easier since ll of us were novices.
There’s nothing worse than sitting down to use your computer, only to find that it’s not working because of a problem.
What could have gone wrong?
- Wifi interference?
- A bad cable?
- Misconfigured software?
- A problem at the ISP?
- or worse… A virus or other malware
We’ve all been there. What do you do? Try to fix it yourself or call in some expensive “Tech Support Service”? Either way, you’re in for a big hassle.
This is where WatermelonPC excels. When there’s a problem connecting to the internet, instead of just showing you a meaningless error message, WatermelonPC will run a battery of diagnostic tests to see what’s working and what isn’t. It then uses a proprietary algorithm to determine the most likely cause of the problem and provides easy to understand actions to help fix it.
If WatermelonPC determines that the problem is caused by your ISP, it will show you who to call and provide you with a list of things to tell the customer service representative to help them fix the problem as quickly as possible.
WatermelonPC can save you from costly “tech support” visits to your home as well as those frustratingly long phone conversations with customer support that no one wants.
